12/11 - Trump meeting with Pelosi and Schumer
12/19 - House and Senate pass bills to fund government through 2/8/2019
12/20 - Trump decides not to sign spending bill
Schumer and Pelosi "flatly said Democrats would not approve money for the barrier."
12/21 - House passes bill with additional $5.7B for border wall. The Senate does not put it up for vote.
Not reported here is that the reason it did not pass is that Democrats would have filibustered it. Where were all the stories about how un-democratic it is to filibuster a budget that would have garnered a majority of votes? Democrats threatening filibuster should earn slightly more blame for the government shutdown than Trump deciding not to sign the previous budget. While both Trump and the Democrats were equally within their rights to act as they did, at least Trump's action was a constitutional power. While objective news would report this as Democrats filibuster budget that more than 50 Senators support, guaranteeing government shutdown, it goes unreported altogether. Instead, they report on how Trump changed his mind two days previously and does not sign the budget.
January - the House passes multiple spending bills that the Senate does not take up because they will not be signed by Trump. How it should be reported: 'House and Senate cannot agree on budget bills.' How it is reported: 'Trump continues to hold government hostage'
Republicans in House try twice to pass bill to pay federal employees while government is shut down. Democrats block them. How it should be reported: 'Democrats block Republican efforts to pay federal employees.' How it is reported - ....
State of the Union:
1/3/2019 - Nancy Pelosi invites Trump to give State of the Union in House of Representatives as is tradition.
1/19/19 - Nancy Pelosi sends Trump letter urging him to reconsider due to government shutdown.
1/27/19 - President Trump responds 'I'm coming'
1/28/19 - Nancy Pelosi responds effectively disinviting him.
How it should be reported: 'Nancy Pelosi dis-invites President from annual State of the Union for Questionable Reasons.' How it is reported: 'Trump caves to Pelosi on State of the Union.'
Trump's backing down on this was actually one of the most presidential things he's done. He did not criticize Pelosi, he stayed positive, and he was the better person in his statement (not in his behavior before the statement). Nancy Pelosi's behavior was petty and dangerous. She invited him, urged him not to come, and then when he said he would, said they'd stop him. Honestly, I was a little concerned. If he decided to come anyway, it could have been a real scary situation, and I'm glad he didn't. But she was the one responsible for raising the stakes here. She should have just disinvited him officially.
